Alexander Smith

Alexander Smith was born in Alabama on December 8, 1831. He was about three years old when his father and mother, William Berry and Mary Anne Smith, arrived in Texas in 1834. He was united in marriage to Catherine (Katie) Whitley on January 27, 1850 in Washington County, Texas. Catherine Whitley, of LaVaca County was born October 13, 1831. They lived in LaVaca County for a number of years, also in Fayette and Wilson Counties.

Alexander was a farmer and stockman and was well liked by all who knew him. He knew what it was like to live in "early day" Texas. On July 8, 1861, he joined the Plum Grove Rifles, Beat #8 at Plum Grove, Texas. According to the history of Fayette County by L.R. Weyand and H. Wade, Alexander Smith later joined Killough's Company with the Arizona Campaign.

On March 29, 1889, Alexander and his wife, along with two other parties by the name of Ned Wingate and Ben Edwards, left Floresville, Texas in a wagon for San Antonio. They had started back home on the 31st, and on the way home an argument started. Ned Wingate struck Alexander on the head with a rock, (see LETTER ) which caused his death on the 10th day of April, 1889. He is buried in the City Cemetary at Floresville, Texas.
